If you know where you are going, you can ski the Main Range, even Upper Thredbo on Christmas Day.

Yes, the main lift runs every day of the year (ignoring maintenance days) so the main range is accessible for post-season back country skiing while there's still snow on the ground. Patch skiing in December isn't unusual.

I know heaps of people who do it every year.

Certain weather models are progging 1.5m+ for Perisher next week. If that occurs, we will have over 3 metres of snow at Spencer's Creek. That hasn't occurred since the early 90s. Really hope that occurs.

Memorial Cup Day (Tuesday) looks set to be held in a blizzard. Some years it can be a bit tropical ... not this year.

Our friends in San Jose registered 111*F in their backyard on Saturday afternoon. It's starting to warm up as Spring hits in Sydney, but we still have this going on; it's forecast to snow all week. The slopes tend to be pretty empty in September, but this year's Spring skiing will be great.

Go that way, really fast; if you're about to hit a tree, turn!

Here's that mottled, cold air welling up from the Antarctic. The small yellow dot shows the NSW snowfields (well ... maybe a little closer to the east coast, to be perfect).

This is a hi-res satellite image of the south east of Australia. Tasmania is disturbing the clouds at bottom of shot, then Victoria and the bottom part of NSW.

I've never seen it quite like that before.

Ding ding! We've well and truly breached the two metre mark on our snow depth measure.

I only started skiing in 2004, and two metres hasn't really happened in my experience, although we've gone close. Looking at the history the last time we clearly went above that mark was in the year 2000 (which looks to have been a fantastic season by the way).

And it continues to snow. We're heading back down there again for a four day weekend on Friday week.

Snow drifts across a freshly groomed piste? Check.

Last night we had a bunch of social media posts showing people digging out stairways and entrances in the village, trying to find their cars, trying to provide access to the on-mountain restaurants, clearing some of the decks on the hill, digging out the top stations for various T-bars, etc. etc.

Seems the snow is proper light and dry powder, it's been that cold. The coming few days are going to be truly epic. Hope conditions stay good for the next nine or ten days.

A big season by local standards and my few days there coincides with warm temps and afternoon slush and then rain.

"Apparently some guy named Keith who had previously knocked out Thredbo’s GM with a snowboard is disputing his ban from the Australian ski area in court– all the while wearing a colander atop his head."

He did more than just knock him out. It was nasty. Nobody is quite sure why the guy wants to show his face in the village again after something like that.
