Music Documentaries - Must listen!

Along the music production theme:
"Sound City"
2013 - produced and directed by Dave Grohl. The story of the LA studio that had a legendary analog mixing desk where quite a few top albums of the 70's and 80's were recorded. Tom Petty, Neil Young, Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac, Rick Springfield, etc... The place where Mick Fleetwood first heard Lindsay Buckingham.

A well told story with interviews with many artists.

Interesting, when the studio finally shut down, Grohl bought the mixer and has it in his home studio.

My favorites were

Twenty Feet from Stardom about Motown backup singers

And
Summer of Soul about the 1969 Harlem Music Festival

Both great docs. There's also one about sidemen featuring Earl Slick etc that's really good.

In a different vibe the Woodstock 99 fratboy disaster documentary is eye opening/ tragic.

My three top concert videos:

The aforementioned "The Last Waltz" (The Band)

"Eagles: Hell Freezes Over"
1994 - Back on stage after a 15 year hiatus, the band is back and focused and better than ever. Top notch production.

"Fleetwood Mac: The Dance"
1997 - another reunion of sorts. I'm not a huge fan of the Buckingham Nicks version of the Mac, but this show is superbly produced both visually and sonically.

One of my recent favorites: "Between Me and My Mind".

A small-scale film that's a lovely portait of Trey Anastasio, the front man and primary composer for Phish. Beautiful shots of the Vermont landscape, too.

I'm also a big fan of Mockumentaries like Spinal Tap and Rock Star..

Gouge, a 2002 documentary about The Pixies is awesome…can’t seem to find it online but here’s a snippet.

Highly recommend this one about the Indigo Girls. We ssw it in preview rough cut and it was really good. Did well at Sundance. Alexandria Bombach's other documentaries (more serious bent) are terrific too.

Plus one for sound city. But Grohl also did Sonic Highways. He and the Foo Fighters went to 8 cities and looked into the history and evolution of the music in each town. Chicago, DC, Nashville, Austin, LA, New Orleans, New York, and Seattle. Just fantastic.
