Wow @textrovert , Squaw didn't look anything like that for us. We got there about 8:15 and the Funitel line was way bigger than @Chickenmonkey 's. It filled up completely to the Member's locker room. I figured we had made a tactical error and gone up with the tee shirt seekers. Force through this line and everything would clear out. The line did move so we were able to eventually upload. Before my bladder exceeded capacity. The bathrooms up top were busy.

We did get there early enough to score a tee shirt! Very cool. Skied straight on to Big Blue. OK, maybe our timing wasn't so bad. Get a couple laps on Shirley while it's early. Oops. Looking down into Shirley we saw an immense crowd. Where did they come from? I really wanted to make a couple turns to feel my new Head Super Joys so we dropped in. No beach ball today but that line sure moves fast considering how many people were there. Riding the chair up, we saw hordes of people coming down. Everyone on our chair was scared off. We followed a horde back to the Funitel.

Now I was thinking that we totally were blowing it by giving up so early. This wave we were in was a bunch of tee shirt seekers and the mountain would clear out soon. Wrong! When we got to the Funitel, it was disgorging mass quantities of people. Now there were huge lines on Gold Coast and Big Blue. I can't imagine Shirley. We rode down with someone from the ride up.

Bailing early let us take mom into Truckee for some shopping and touristing. Oops, if the lines at Squaw were long, this was a crowd at another level. Remnants of a parade were driving against us. Until we stopped. We u turned and headed back to Squaw. By now, we were getting into the crowd scene so we decided to head into Tahoe City.

Made it as far as the Bridgetender where we found a park, a table and got a wonderful lunch. A hike to look at the dam and the lake was just right. Made it back against the traffic flow after a nice outing.

We got back to Squaw early enough that I hoped to find the Pugski tailgate. Road my bike around the full parking lot but couldn't find them. Sigh.

Fun day - more for people watching than skiing. Squaw did too good a job getting people up. But it was a fun vibe.

Got in some fun skiing over the 4th of July weekend at Squaw but just couldn't bring myself to brave the chaos on the 4th - thus no t-shirt:(
Sure hopping someone will post a pic of their new T-shirt so I don't have to wait till the next opportunity to ski on the 4th to see what I missed out on.

@Jed Peters : How is the recovery going?

Well thank you for the question!

I was just back in the hospital last Thursday-Sunday, and am out now. I finally got my new hardware and leg put in, and it's looking pretty good! The job that the specialist at UCD did vs the Orthopedist/not really a trauma surgeon/guy that was on call when my heli made it is super noticeable. Looks like a pro job now.

I am walking on it little distances without crutches, but most of the time I'm on crutches.

Yes, @Jed Peters , I always think of your recovery, but don't want to ask all the time because I know it can be tiring. Thanks @skibob for triggering an update :) I was gonna say, soon we start the countdown to the 2017/18 season. Not yet, Squaw is still operating ;)

@Mendieta I will open a new one as soon as the fall is turning to winter, shops are transitioning mountain bikes to skis, the new magazines are firmly placed in skier bathrooms, people are scraping off the summer wax, the latest warren miller movie is playing at your local mini-theatre, leaves are falling along with the first couple of snowfalls....

It's like being in love. Once you're in it, you know it...

Your call my friend, as long as you are willing to make some turns with a poor intermediate, once the season actually begins :)

Mammoth was extremely busy also, more so than July 2&3 because there was a promotion where anyone showing a a January lift ticket could ski free on July 4. The chair 2 parking lot was full by 7:30 so when we arrived at 8:05 we had to park about 15 cars up the road from the end of the lot. However once you got on the mountain there were 5 chairs plus a gondola serving actual ski terrain. Thus I waited in lift lines 5 minutes max and skied 21,000 vertical before quitting about 1PM.

I know, I know this is a Tahoe thread but I'm in Bend having lunch on Sunday and overheard some folks talking about skiing Bachelor so I had to do it. No equipment, no ski gear, nothing. Bought some ski socks, and rented gear. 165 skis, usually 185 and rental boots. Ouch. Snow was great, top to bottom and they had a great crowd. Now I can claim the 4th of July.

Mt. Bachelor SHOULD be the best place in North America for June/early July skiing in the long run. mtbachelor_closings.jpg

The Summit lift opened in 1983. Bachelor gets enough snow to make it to July in about 2/3 of seasons vs. 1/3 at Mammoth.

It's not hard to figure out when Powdr Corp took over Mt. Bachelor. There have been a few years Bachelor has been open for the first weekend of July since then, but Bachelor has never been open to the public between Memorial Day and the end of June under Powdr Corp.

Sad really :( .

I coached May ski camps there for a number of years in the 80's. Always a few powder days mixed in with the corn skiing :) . Bachelor & the surrounding Bend community were always very accommodating & helpful. A 360 degree volcano like Bachelor along with the the copious amounts of snow allow for amazing Spring conditions.

With the popularity of the summer camps at Timberline, it seems like there is plenty of potential for Bachelor to take up the slack & find their nitch.

Always had dependable early season conditions as well.

Bachelor blows away Timberline for terrain scale and variety. Mammoth aggressively recruits race camps whenever they see they will have along spring season. Bachelor could surely do likewise. They did in 2012 but did not allow the public on the mountain until June 29.:(

Fun time at Squaw today. Soft but skiable snow. It is melting fast. Big Blue is gone. Squaw is doing a great job of harvesting and managing the snow that is left.

There was a full corral at Shirley but the line was fast. I was kind of expecting a dead hill so it was refreshing to have a bunch of people to share the nice morning with. Missed the Pugski banner in the parking lot though...

Got to dial in my Head Great Joys. I mounted the bindings too far forward. I love Schizios because I was able to get the skis working with a 3cm adjustment. I still have some left to experiment with next year. Productive day.

Off to waterski this afternoon. I'm skiing in a tournament in Sacramento tomorrow so didn't want to get too sore on the snow.

Also at Squaw today, agree fun day. However, looking at the snow melt from the 4th, just 3 days ago, I don't think they will be open much longer - i give them one more Saturday at the most.

So we ended up changing our flights to fly from Vegas into Reno Friday the 21st.

What are the chances that squaw will be open on Saturday the 22nd? Or should we just plan on going to Mammoth? If so, does it make sense to fly to Reno then day trip Mammoth or do a one way car rental and drive from Vegas to Mammoth then on to Tahoe?

It seems like folks who were there recently see little chances of Squaw being open much longer, and that Mammoth is much better anyways for late spring/summer skiing anyways (because they salt the snow, open early, etc)

I don't quite understand your schedule. Do you fly into Reno and back from Reno, too, a few days later? If that is the case, I would rent a car, and drive to Mammoth and then back to Reno, and perhaps spend a few hours or a day on the Lake, depending on how flight times, etc stack up. Hope this helps!

Our schedule is fly to Vegas on Weds the 19th, renting a car, spending 2 nights there, then flying to Reno Friday evening, already have a car rented there. Then flying home from Reno on Weds the 26th. Have fri sat and sun nights booked in Reno, mon and tues in SLT.

So now we're thinking mammoth, we could either drive from Vegas on Friday and spend the night there and ski Saturday then drive on to Reno after, or stick to our original plan and day trip mammoth from Reno either Sat Sun or Mon. Heck maybe we should do 2 days since we're there. Any idea how crowded mammoth might be? What about places to stay? Other general thoughts ? Thanks!
