Worked in a ski shop in '87 when I got these. Does anyone know if that is the production year?

It is likely stamped on them somewhere. But yes 86-87-88 is when those where out and quite popular. The D suffix denotes the diagonal release feature of that heel piece. I'm not certain what year the 390D (4-10) was replaced by the 490D (4-10), 1986?. Then I think in 87-88ish the next 490RD (6-12) was released (pun intended), and then for good measure the 490RD metal (6-14) was on the market.

These were popular with powder skiers, especially the ones that liked to play in the woods. You could just give the heel latch a tug upward and you were out, even if upside down in a tree well!

I have a pair of 490 D with a DIN setting number that goes from 4 to 10 (although I did set them at 11 for crazy sh*t). The RD is the race department version of that binding with the only difference being the colour (red not gray) and the spring that allowed you to set a higher DIN release number according to the salesman who sold them to me. IIRC I got mine in 1983. The 1983 (again IIRC) bindings were all-metal. Mine are all metal. The 1994 (IIRC) 490 D were made with Delrin plastic and subject to a recall.

Well according to this print ad in Nov. 1986, the 'all new 400 series' debut.

Are you sure you are not thinking of the 390D? The early '86 490D(4-10) had LOTS of plastic on them, the later 490RD (6-12) less so and the later 490RD (6-14) were all metal where it counts

The pair I have are from the 1986 - 1987 season. See them in the "All Things Tyrolia" Thread, those Kastle skis that they are mounted on are not the ski that they were first mounted.
