Hiked near Mt. Baker Ski Area today. There's a little snow on the ground and on the rocks, but it was like summer up there today, beautiful and sunny. The car said 61F but it felt like 72F. The melt was going strong and there were lots of great water features. Later next week it's supposed to get back to the regularly scheduled weather programing, but this was very nice.
We started out at the Heather Meadows base area and could see that ski season is approaching, but it needs a bit more snow. This is chair 1 and the ski patrol hut on Pan Dome:
We turned away and headed into the Bagley Lakes area. At the bottom of Mt. Herman, right near the parking area, there is a memorial.
It says, "Sam Carter, May the sun always be at your feet and the powder at your knees!"
This is directly at the base of Mt. Herman which is not in the ski area but is a frequent target for BC skiers and boarders. Sam Carter lost his life in an avalanche there in 2012. This picture is from a past season and you can see the allure:
We headed up the valley toward Herman Saddle at its end:
And I got a couple of interesting pictures along the way.
This one is in full color of Bagley Lake and the slopes above:
