Its hard to imagine that much can shake JT Holmes, but he is still shaken up a bit after being buried and unconscious in an avalanche. JT Holmes is grateful to be alive, thanks to the prepared individuals he was skiing with, as well as the discussion about avalanche protocol and beacon practice at the beginning of the day.

Many of the recent avalanches in the Sierra have been accounted to the hoar frost, creating a crazy weak layer.
From the Sierra Avalanche Center:
Typically, in the Sierra Nevada when surface hoar forms it’s broken down by warm temperatures or high winds before getting buried.

Buried surface hoar, unlike wind and storm slabs which are more common to the region, has a tendency to form persistent weak layers that contribute to avalanches that are difficult to predict.
