Without ever having lived in Reno or knowing much about Peavine Peak, my initial reaction after some quick web searching is this reads like something promoted to the clueless by real estate developers and city business types. First look at this online topographic map of the peak:

http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=39.59582,-119.91331&z=15&t=T&marker0=39.58963,-119.92936,peavine peak nv

Notice that the peak top at a mediocre 8240+ elevation and has only about 2000 vertical feet on the north facing canyon before the topography becomes much more gradual in what on the satellite view looks like Great Basin sparse sagebrush. It is bad enough that those lower zones are only at 6000 feet and less, well below the average winter snow level but without forest with open soil between clumps of sagebrush, ground temperatures are sure to be on average warm thus quick to melt any snows. Certainly not enough vertical for a standard 3k downhill course. Also the below summitpost.org comment tends to relate the mountain usually has poor snow depths:

snippet:

The snow on Peavine Peak comes and goes during the winter months. A winter storm may cover Peavine from top to bottom and snow, and it will melt a week later. For example, the first photo below shows Peavine Peak three days after a major snow event in February 2007 and the second photo shows Peavine Peak four days later, by which time the snow had melted.

Google searching or Youtube searching on "Peavine ski" shows only a single hit:

Viewing that video shows even when that guy skied the peak the depths were sketchy except where snow drifted. Being on the east side of the Sierra Nevada range is in its rain shadow where winter storms tend to drop a lot less precipitation and do so less consistently. That is not to say that there are probably periods like during some wet winters when there may be plenty of snow up there. That news release talks about the view towards downtown Reno. Well since the peak is northwest of Reno, they would have to be talking about the sunny exposed southeast facing slopes of that peak that are certain to have even less snow.

It is amazing to this person something like this has apparently gotten attention that newspapers are now bringing to public light. If there is ever a winter olympics in the Tahoe region again, it will need to be at ski resorts already there. Someone like Tony C might chime in with some precipitation data.

someone has loose rocks in their heads,
David

Truthfully, this post still shows up for me occasionally as the top news post. Generally posts from this date aren't left up in standard rotation in perpetuity.

@SSSdave , you might want to go back and read the original post again (and note the date).

Or perhaps the rest of us just got rolled by your serious-tone post?

True story:
I went skiing at Mt Rose on April 1st. I bumped into @OptionTahoe, who happens to be a fairly savvy guy. He said, he got a couple paragraphs into the original story, wondering how in the heck @Philpug keeps getting the scoop on stuff like this, until it dawned on him.

Sometimes what starts out as a joke becomes real. Remember Jimmy Kimmel's "Trumped" with Nathan Lane and Mathew Broderick? Strange things happen, even when there is no bobsled run or ski jump in the Sierras.

I'm thinking that Korea 2018 venue is in jeopardy. Anyone talking about a back up venue for 2018 yet??
