Hello

I have two kids aged 5 & 7. Last year I spent many trips to get the gear from the car to the ski lodge. MI believe my kids are now big enough to carry their own stuff, skis, boots, helmet, goggles gloves.

What is the best way to manage this, a backpack style boot bag for them? strap to carry skis on shoulder?

Other ideas?

I noticed most people put their boots on at their car and walk through the parking lot with them. I am not a fan of this. Thinking it might be ok for the kids as they have old beater boots that they outgrow every year? This will be less stuff to carry however not sure if the challenge for kids to walk in their boots is worth it.

Phil beat me to it! But if you have any questions on my review, feel free to post or ask me in PM. Caveat that my kids are a lot younger than yours so our situation is slightly different. However, the Tandem really has proven to be a lifesaver.

That being said, you could also consider their own single backpack style bag, especially for the 7 year old (and maybe do the Tandem for yours and the 5yo's gear). I do personally walk through the lot often with my own boots on and it doesn't add crazy wear to them, but with kids I would rather they keep their footing on icy parking lots and boot up in the lodge, I think it makes a better experience for them unless you park super close to the lifts.

No better option than the @KULKEA Tandem Ski Boot Duffel reviewed HERE.

That won't work for TWO kids with gear and skis to haul.

I once tried a baseball duffel for kids gear, little skis in the bat slot, boots and gloves in the big duffel part. Worked but they quickly got big enough to carry their own gear thankfully.

Booting up at the car is still the best, easiest way for one adult to get all the gear, goggles, spare gloves, etc for two or more kids to the lodge.. Everyone wearing boots is the best way, but I agree not to leave good boot soles naked and unprotected..

Kids wear boots, helmets, carry skis and poles. Dad/mom uses backpack boot bag and totes all essential gear like gloves goggles, brown bag lunches etc.. Or, just wear all the gear and boots with these on them.. That's what I do.. Leave them hanging on the ski rack in front of the base lodge looped through my cable lock.

Thank you for the review you did on the tandem bag. If I wanted to put two pairs of boots in it what is the largest size the bag would take? My kids are 18.5 and 19.5 I am 29.5.

I agree I would rather the kids not walk through the parking lot with their boots, at this age they are easily distracted and not familiar and adjusted to walking with boots on so I could see them falling easily.

I would like to look into the tandem bag a bit more but also think your recommendation of the single backpack is a good idea nd the direction tha tI wnat to go in anyway. My 5 year old boy is almost as tall as his sister so they might be able to carry backpacks.

I see there are two children's backpack on Sierra Trading, the High Sierra Junior Trapezoid Boot Bag and also the Athalon Tri-Athalon Boot Bag (for kids).

Besides Sierra Trading and Level 9 any other places to look for a kids boot bag backpack.

I only have one and I know it is A LOT easier than two. When mine was young we left really really early so I could park close to the lodge, made a huge difference. An extra trip wasn't a big deal because it was close AND we had lots of time to kill. Your older one especially is big enough to carry some stuff but don't let them scratch up the other cars with their stuff, I hate that. Dealing with your own equipment is part of the sport, the earlier the better but 5 year old wont be able to, 7 is questionable.

Both kids (and adults) can carry boot bag back packs with their helmet/gear inside and thier own poles, helps keep them from falling too. Parents can carry thier own skis on one sholder and a pair of kids skis on the other (or just hold them in one hand). If they can manage it, it is nice if the kids can carry the parents poles but once you get the program down you can carry two pair of skis and your poles.

Ok I think I will buy a backpack boot bag. I already have a Level 9 bag with a shoulder strap for myself. Figure I might get 1 or 2 bags as I have two kids and my wife has boots too. I might buy one of one style and another of another style and then figure it out from there.

The best options I see are the links below , let me know if there are others to consider:

one of the High Sierra bags or the Athalon?

or this WSD on ebay?

or the trans pack jr

.

I'm not sure the max size, as both my husband and I have smaller sized boots. Mine fit in easily at 24.5. Maybe @Philpug could answer since I think he has a Tandem too? The interior compartment dividers are flexible, though, so I bet it would work with a 29.5.

Not to be a corporate shill, but Kulkea offers a kids bag too, and I have had the adult version of both Kulkea and Transpack and think the design tends to be slightly better on the Kulkea, although they are pretty similar.

Both my kids have backpack boot bags, transpack style. We leave them packed with boots, socks, more socks, helmets, gloves, spare gloves, goggles, spare goggles, etc ready to hit the road on short notice for day trips. They can totally wear the back pack and use their hands/arms to carry skis and poles all by themselves now... but they are teenagers thank God! Seriously though, they could haul all their own gear from about age 6 or 7..

Since we signed on with Kulkea, we've had a chance to see a lot of cook features and ideas implemented in their bags.

@Andy Mink just posted his review of the adult Powder Trekker here

Thanks for the link for the kids bag.

I think I am going to go with the High Sierra as we only make 3-4 trips to Tahoe a year if we are lucky. Am sure the Kulkea is superior in quality but the High Sierra is half the price and bigger. Got the kids school backpacks from Costco back in August and they seem to be very good quality, the get heavily used daily and get pretty beat up and are still in great shape. Hope their bootbag is the same quality.

I'm sure they will work out great! It was so much easier when we only had to think about carrying our own gear, huh?

as far as the skis go. eventually you will need to help carry an extra pair of skis.

i think getting ski strap so you can put a pair on your back will be useful. there are commercial products or you can just do it with any about a 10ft loop of cordage/ribbon/webbing.

see the youtube for aspen highlands video

pro tip, have the kids put their helmets on at the car. They take a lot of space in the bags but, more importantly, they have a little protection when they slip on the icy parking lot. It keeps them warm too.

I just received 3 of the High Sierra boot backpacks from Sierra Trading Post, two for the kids and one for the wife... ended up getting black ones as in the last two weeks the other colors sold out, now they are all sold out...

just put everyones boots in the bags along with helmet goggles and gloves and bibs and there is still tons of room, great deal, ended up being around $22 each with the 25% coupon...

ordered some batman and kids super hero iron on sew on patches from ebay so that we can personalize the bags since they all look the same...

now we just need some snow in tahoe....

This is a good point, the slipping part. I was riding the lift with a couple of guys today. One said he had slipped in the parking lot several years ago and his helmet saved him. He went over backwards with skis in one hand and poles in the other. His head impacted quite hard. He was convinced that he would have been seriously injured had he not been wearing his helmet.
