Surprisingly, Northstar looks like they are getting ready to start making snow (you can see the snow gun connected but not operating in lower right). Almost 3 weeks to opening day. Maybe that means they intend to open with a lot of terrain?

I heard (what I thought was) testing snow guns one day while I was at work.

Coming with a ski club and they will have a shuttle for the side trip to N or K, so not concerned with the drive although I would prefer more time on the hill which would be possible on Kirkwood trip.
Northstar is more groomer-focused.

But the most relevant difference is probably elevation.

Base Summit
Northstar 1,929 m/ 6,330 ft 2,624 m/ 8,610 ft
Kirkwood 2,377 m/ 7,800 ft 2,987 m/ 9,800 ft

Kirkwood will almost certainly have more early season snow. And not have gotten quite as skied over Xmas and new year .

This time of year, I find a lot of the time I walk outside and think, "Damn, what a nice day*. This sucks!"

*In Santa Rosa, which, although much warmer than Tahoe, follows the same general weather trends.

The most disappointing part is driving around town and seeing all the snow at the top of Rose, and then remembering that the base (the important part), which isn't visible from Reno, is dry and brown and sad.

I just checked the webcam at the base. Granted, it is night, but there seems to be some snow? Any updates on Rose, anybody? Any rumors on an opening date? This is too hard to endure :crossfingers:

ok, I suspect folks can point me to a more appropriate thread, never thinking of skiing the Sierra's, but a few bud's of mine are looking likely in Jan ... and Reno looks inviting for one as he loves to lose money ... so skiing destination is to include a wee bit of gambling.

Any recommendations, I noted to them that @Philpug would aid in recommendations ... ; ) move me over to other thread if better

Yes, Pete, @Philpug and @Tricia are locals at Reno. Are you looking for places to stay at Reno or places to Ski from Reno? The closest area from Reno would be Mt Rose. But a little further you have N*, Squaw and Alpine. You might also look into Incline Village for a cozier, but more expensive destination with some gambling. The Hyatt Regency has a (small, I believe) casino. We stayed there a few times, but never visited the casino itself. Cheers!

Hi Pete, do your buds have a place to stay yet?
Many of the Casino's in Reno have good packages for stay and ski, including Grand Sierra and Peppermill. @Older boot travels a lot for work and comes to Reno frequently so he may have some recommendations on that as far as staying here.

If I were you I'd go one one to the different casinos and see what they have going on for shows.
For instance - Grand Sierra's just for example.

They have everything for shows from Tosh.O to Don Rickels and music from a variety of performers.
Atlantis is having Bill Engval this month, and some other great acts through the winter.
....And so on...
All of the casinos have your usual gambling, dining, shows, etc
Some have shuttles to/from ski resorts
All have shuttle from the airport

All of this is located 40-50 minutes away from world class skiing

While that was flattering, (especially for Ziggy) it was not very helpful. ;)

Opening day at Northstar is Friday November 18th. As of today, we're scheduling the staff like we're opening strong. Lets hope this storm comes in on Tuesday and Wednesday and brings some cold temps.
