Shots of tequila aren't just good for kicking the party up a notch. New research suggests tequila can also help boost bone health.



Scientists in Mexico have discovered a substance in the tequila plant that helps boost the absorption of calcium.

The blue variety of the Agave tequilana plant also helps improve magnesium absorption – both are essential compounds for healthy bones.

"The consumption of fructans contained in the agave [plant], in collaboration with adequate intestinal micriobiota, promotes the formation of new bone, even with the presence of osteoporosis," said Dr. Mercedes Lopez of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Mexico in a Science Daily report.

Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, leaving them fragile and prone to breaking.

Scientists conducted the study on mice after inducing osteoporosis in females by removing their ovaries. The mice then were given agave fructans. Eight weeks later, they took samples to measure the mice's absorption of minerals and the presence of osteocalcin – a protein that signifies the production of new bone.

They found the mice who consumed the agave fructans synthesized almost 50% more osteocalcin. They also found the diameter of their bones was higher.

Scientists say the results "provide the possibility of developing an alternative in the treatment of osteoporosis."

LOL. Bota bags! They were big a long time ago, for certain. It appears the 24oz can of beer is the most popular 'canteen' on the mountain these days. :-(

I learned at a young age how to properly drink from a bota bag. You aren't doing it right if it doesn't look like a water fountain when you drink from it and it only counts if the stream goes up as far as it goes down. None of this over your head dispensing. Arms out front at shoulder level, shooting up is where it's at.
