After California’s Local Agency Formation Commission determined that the proposed town wouldn’t be financially viable, the backers of the incorporation formally withdrew from their effort to incorporate.

Reno Gazette Journal reports -

I'm not sure when or if the healing happen, but I hope Squaw Valley can find some balance.

Sun Peaks B.C. in winter, Victoria B.C. in summer
Pretty much the exact opposite happened at Sun Peaks Resort a few years ago when the B.C. government created a new type of municipality called a Resort Municipality. So now with only 400 year round residents there is a mayor and council. I think the SP Resort Corp. gets a seat on council.

I'm not really sure how it all works but there is now more local decision making and less involvement from regional politicians, and way less of a "company town" feel to the place and less civic involvement by the Resort Corp.and most importantly as a town there are more grants and direct funding from the B.C. government.
