It isn't valuable to Vail (MTN). The name EPIC Ski is a liability since it is similar to everything "epic" MTN does, especially the EPIC Pass. Some of the people posting there are also a liability, and this includes some moderators.

Some of mods and members of EPIC Ski hate Vail, right? They think it is the Evil Empire, right? A lot of the regulars at EPIC Ski will never stay in the accommodations MTN is pushing (e.g., Rock Resorts), won't spend $800 per day on private lessons, won't spend money in the restaurants, etc. It simply makes no sense for MTN to keep something with the name "EPIC" that doesn't push its brand 100%.

This is no big deal for MTN. I imagine RobKatz couldn't care less about EPIC Ski or what happens to it. His model is the Las Vegas casino business model on steroids. Bend over backward to get the big spending "Whales" giving them the very best there is to offer and make everyone else an offer they can't refuse (the EPIC Pass). Epic Ski doesn't fit into that model.

yes, exactly, you get it! And some people still think MTN should have left it up for longer to give people more time to slag off VR!!! ........I'm just surprised they didn't just give 12 hours notice....

For what it's worth, I totally understand why a quick shut-down would be preferrable. I just don't know that it's always the right decision for people involved, or more to the point of what a company might care about, for PR.

I've been on both sides of issues like this in my professional life, and it's not always clear that "ripping off the band-aid" is the right way to go. In this case, it likely is - but we'll see. Plus there's no good way to quantify the ill-will garnered and what effect it may have long term.

Wow. I wouldn't be on Pugski without EpicSki. I wouldn't have been convinced to buy Kastle without EpicSki. I wouldn't have known a lot of stuff without EpicSki. Sad to see it go.

Yes, but why did they pay to keep it open for 4 years before that?

Maybe they paid for a long term contract with Huddler and it was easier just to let the site continue than trying to get out of the contract? Just a thought.

<Snip political commentary because we don't do that here>

We're talking about a forum of probably less than 500 "active" weekly users here, not some major publication.. barely a blip on Vail's radar. They bought it to secure the name trademark, nothing else..NADA! They kept it running a few years simply to not be such a bad evil whatever. Last year they cut the staff in half. Who didn't see this coming? Vail could care less because isn't making significant revenues and that was never their intention.

We got a few post reports and some clean up on Aisle 12 and 13.
For those who missed it, while we have many common members with EpicSki, there are a few things that you will notice are different.
Here is a welcome thread so you understand a little about the vibe of this site.

Another welcome thread, this time with rules

A lot of the regulars at EPIC Ski will never stay in the accommodations MTN is pushing (e.g., Rock Resorts), won't spend $800 per day on private lessons, won't spend money in the restaurants, etc. Worse, they openly state this in the forums. It simply makes no sense for MTN to keep something with the name "EPIC" that doesn't push its brand 100%.

Was just in Vegas for the first time in years...I'm sure they still bend over backwards to attract the Whales, but prices for everyone else have gone way up.

VR has engendered a lot of good will with low season pass prices, but they have been creeping up while the window prices have sky rocketed with many discounts evaporating (i.e. buddy and employee tickets were around $50 a few years ago and are now closer to $100, PSIA discount tix $85 last year, $110 this year).

Both of the above make sense to me, but I do think the content of the site has more value in attracting lurkers and vacation planners than the active user numbers would indicate. My guess is that all the content will not be lost and wouldn't be surprised to see pro VR/Epic resort content (and other content that attracts those researching their ski vacations) back on the site in a non-forum format with plenty of opportunities to book vacations and lift tickets without the distraction of negative VR posters.

Welcome to all of the Epic refugees! Its a good place, enjoy it, and please try to behave (at least occasionally). I am prtty sure most of the active Epic members will migrate here, and with time some of the saved content will find its way here as well. What is lost is, unfortunately, the insanely high Google search rating for EpicSki, PugSki will have to climb that mountain.

I didn't post on Epic often -- much more on SkiDivas than Epic -- but I think it's safe to say that if you liked Epic, you will quickly grow to love the Pugski community. This is an incredibly welcoming, helpful and encouraging group of people regardless of where you ski and whether you ski blues, blacks, or you're green and looking to build your knowledge, abilities and confidence.

No matter where you are, and what type of skier you are, folks here want to make you enjoy skiing even more.

That's right. Try to behave. No snarky remarks about Northstar in comparison to Squaw . . . .

Bwahahahahaha . . . you catch me on that every time.:snowball:

Evolution. Remember Rec.skiing, Paula's Ski Lovers, SkiNet, epic, etc.?

Wow, old memories.
I started on rec.skiing.alpine when it first started. . Was there till the jerk from Seattle hijacked it with his spam. Yes the guy a Judge ordered
off the internet ! . . rec.skiing.alpine.moderated was started to solve this problem but by then most everyone left for Paula's & others.
I check back once every year or two and he is still there flaming away ! Life's too short and he wasted 20 years of his life.
