1980 - Went on a ski trip back in school in what seemed to be this exact car (friend's Dad's vehicle). I remember an after dark white knuckle drive over an icy Vail Pass in this beast.

I had one of these in the winter of 1969-70 for weekend trips to Stowe:

A gas station attendant in Burlington looked at it and said "your skis are worth more than your car." He was right.
Among my friends it was widely regarded as the worst car in North America, but we passed a lot of spun-off-the-road VWs on the Taconic Parkway.

Gonna upgrade my ski ride to this:

Gas mileage isn't too good, but there just aren't many choices if you want an AWD hatchback.

The Taconic Parkway has done in a lot of cars as it curves back and forth on the east side of the Hudson river.

I had one of these freshmen year at Mt State U. My first front wheel drive car. Lost the brakes coming down Loveland Pass (pre-tunnel). It was.....educational?

It is funny that in the 60s and 70s a car made a good ski vehicle if it had a hatchback, had front wheel drive, or you could attach a ski rack to it. What about ground clearance so you don't get bogged down in the snow??
